Who I Am

My name is Marji McCoy and I am overjoyed to be a YAV in Hollywood for the 2015-16 year! I am a recent graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, WV (We are…Marshall!). I studied chemistry with a pre-med focus and will attend Marshall University’s School of Medicine in 2016 upon my return. While I do think science is a lot of fun, I also enjoy taking part in live theater, pick up soccer games, yoga, camping trips, and musical jam sessions to name a few of my other interests.                                                                                                      During my junior year of college, I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. My education there consisted not only of genetics and anatomy classes, but also of how to build relationships with people from different backgrounds. I made many lifelong friends from all over the world. From day one they invited me into their homes as a stranger, offering me food and friendship. It was a level of hospitality that I had never experienced in America. It was because of this experience that I decided to become a young adult volunteer before continuing my formal education. I am looking forward to forming more relationships full of hospitality, love and trust with people who may initially seem very different; the homeless of Hollywood. I hope that as I become a doctor this experience will always remind me of what it means to serve others.

I want to say a special thank you to my family for always sending me out with love, and to my church family at Beckley Presbyterian Church for nurturing my growing faith.
